What is Animal Reiki?

Reiki is a safe, non-invasive energy healing therapy that helps your animals own healing mechanisms to address physical, emotional, mental and spiritual problems. Reiki does not involve any pressure, manipulation or massage.

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese word that means universal life force. Rei means the universal wisdom and knowledge, the part of you that makes things tick. Ki means life force, the energy that flows through all living things and is present in all inanimate things. Reiki originated in Japan and was discovered by Dr Mikao Usui. It came to the west in the 1930s.

Reiki works on all the energies of the body. It balances, heals and harmonises the body, mind and spirit by removing negative energy and stagnant/blocked chi -the subtle electromagnetic vibrational particles that everything consists of. It can only be used for greatest and highest good. It creates positive energy and calmness.

You do not have to believe in Reiki for it to work, as animals naturally and intuitively respond well to the energy healing it provides.

What Animals is Reiki suitable for?

Reiki is suitable for pets, working animals, livestock and even wild animals.

Reiki can help a terminally ill animal during its illness and at the time of its passing, as it can provide relief from the stress and anxiety it may be experiencing. Reiki can also help the owner of such an animal to cope in these difficult circumstances.

What happens in a Reiki Session?

Before Reiki can be given to any animal, you will need to contact its veterinary surgeon to obtain permission for the therapy to begin. It is usually better to advise the vet that the therapy may involve more than one session. Before I begin Reiki I will require you to sign a declaration confirming that a vet's permission has been sought and obtained. If the vet requires information about the therapy I am more than happy to discuss it with them.

When I attend the first therapy session I will undertake a full consultation with you in respect of your animal.

A full Reiki session can take about one hour, including the consultation.

There should be a calm, quiet and secure area, where the animal feels relaxed and comfortable, for the Reiki therapy to take place.

During a Reiki session I position my hands gently on, or just above, different parts of the animal's body according to its needs, and the type and personality of the animal receiving the therapy. It is a totally non-invasive process.

Sometimes an animal may want the Reiki from a distance, especially at first when they are not too sure what is happening. Gradually though, most animals will come forward to receive the hands-on therapy as they come to understand the benefits of it.

At no time will the therapy be forced upon the animal.

The therapy will be given to the animal in whatever position is most natural and comfortable for them. For example, with horses the usual position is standing, whereas dogs will often sit or lie. Cats may want to climb on my lap or on a chair.

Caged or tanked animals can be given Reiki in situ.

The animal's body decides on where the Reiki is needed and utilizes it accordingly. They may seek out treatment by placing certain parts of their body into my hands or by indicating where it is required.

When your animal relaxes into the therapy they should feel peaceful and will often give signs of it working by sighing, yawning, twitching and falling asleep.

Please remember that Reiki is not a substitute for traditional veterinary treatment , it is complementary to it, and as such you must obtain veterinary treatment when and where necessary .

The veterinary Surgery Act of 1966 prohibits anyone other than a qualified veterinary surgeon from treating animals, including diagnosis of ailments and giving of advice on such diagnosis. However the healing of animals by contact healing, by the laying on of hands or distant healing is legal. However the Protection of Animals Act 1911 requires that if an animal clearly needs treatment from a veterinary surgeon the owner must obtain this. To give emergency First Aid to animals for the purpose of saving life or relieving pain is permissible under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 Schedule 3.
